Why Write a Blog?

For a long time, I thought the idea of writing a blog was ridiculous. Not to insult the many people of the internet who do. I don’t see their blogs as ridiculous. It was the idea of ME writing a blog that I found ridiculous. I always thought of blogs as serving a purpose, to offer advice, to voice an opinion, or to share expertise. I never felt that I fit into any of these categories.

I didn’t have any advice I wanted to share or an opinion I felt I desperately needed to voice, and while there are many subjects I consider myself very knowledgeable on (all that money I spent on my bachelor’s degree was fortunately not a waste), I believe expertise comes with experience. As someone who is only in his mid-twenties, I don’t think I’ve had enough time to become the kind of expert who should be offering advice to the masses.

Which returns us to the original question. Why write a blog? Well, I’ve been known on occasion to ramble about the odd thing that interests me, and I know a lot about, or on some occasions ramble about nothing at all. I learn, read, and just accrue knowledge, both non-fiction and fiction alike. Oftentimes, when I accrue this knowledge, I like to share it with friends, family, and if no one else is around to listen, any ghosts that might be lurking in the corner of the room.

So, during one of these rambles with my mother, she asked me if I’d ever considered writing these down and posting them as a blog. Initially, I said no, why would I write a blog? As said earlier, the idea was ridiculous. But she continued to encourage me to, if not post them, then at least write them down when I have them. So, as any good son does, I listened to my mother. And next time one of these ramblings came on, I rambled to my computer.

It wasn’t particularly hard to write it. I found it flowed much the same when I sit down to write fiction (if it was not obvious from the rest of my website, I am a writer). After I wrote it, I just left it sitting there on my computer in one of my various draft folders and moved on. Recently, I was reminded of it and decided to pull it up and give it another read, and was shocked when I did to discover that I found it to be really well-written. Suddenly, the idea of posting my rambling didn’t seem so bad. I’ve put my writing out into the void before, knowing it was unlikely to actually reach an audience. I could do it again. I like rambling to an audience, and the internet, however big or small a portion of it this reaches, is an audience.

So that’s why I’m writing a blog, to create a place for my ramblings and hopefully spare some of my family and friends from the odd interruption that is me popping up at random times to talk at them. That’s what this blog will be. If you’ve come here looking for any consistency of topic, I am afraid you’ll be disappointed. I ramble about anything that fills my interest, from video games to history to sports to fictional things I made up that exist only in my head. These are just The Inane Ramblings of a Writer (perhaps later to be renamed The Inane Ramblings of a Madman, but I don’t think I’m quite there yet).

So, if you stumbled upon this blog by chance, I hope you found something of interest, and if you’re one of the people considering hiring me (for those of you who stumbled upon it, this website is primarily my portfolio), I hope you learned a little more about me as a writer and a person.
